Jawaharlal Nehru Tropical Botanic Garden and Research Institute, a premier R&D institution under Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE), Govt of Kerala (National Centre of Excellence in ex situ conservation and sustainable utilization of tropical plants diversity).   The   Royal Botanic Gardens, KewUnited Kingdom is an internationally important botanical research and education institution that houses the “largest and most diverse botanical and mycological collections in the world. These two well-known botanical conservatory gardens joint hands to work on an international project in Urban landscape improvement and orchid conservation at Thiruvananthapuram City (JNTBGRI – KEW initiative on Connecting People with Nature’).

Brief summary of the Project

Kerala, which has a land area of just over one percent of India, has about 30% of all endemic orchid species. There is a continuing trend globally of less and less proportion of people of all ages disconnected from nature and biodiversity to the detriment of their well-being. Therefore, the potential impact of biodiversity decline/enhancement on human well-being is an area of active research. The proposed PhD projects will study selected orchid species for their population characteristics, phenology, asymbiotic and symbiotic growth in vitro, assisted colonisation, and their use in urban landscapes to connect people with nature. Detailed studies on the impact of mycorrhizal fungi on plant fitness in a warming world will also be part of the studentships. Range of methods such as in vitro, genomics and different modelling methods to understand plant growth under increased CO2 and temperature will be tested.

As part of this programme, JNTBGRI recruits Junior Research Fellows/Post doctoral fellows with valid fellowships.
